Probably the most frustrating thing for a problem solver is to find out that a problem has reoccurred once the solution has been put in place.  Typically, this isn’t a failure to find the correct root cause, but a lack of follow-up or not implementing the correct controls to maintain the solution.
We’ve all had it happen.  So what are the things you need to do to ensure the problem stays solved.  Here are a few things to consider:
  • Make sure the problem owner is in full agreement with the solution and understands what is required to maintain the process.
  • Make sure all documentation is changed that the solution effects.
  • Make sure everyone involved with the process is trained thoroughly in any process changes.
  • Conduct an assessment and follow-up of the solution about a month after implementation to make sure everything is going according to plan and there are no lose ends.
  • Continue to monitor the key metric to make sure the solution is effective on-going.
  • Look at other areas or departments that may benefit from the solution and read-across to those areas if appropriate.

By taking a few precautions and following through you can ensure your problem solving ventures are a success!
